Description

How did the project start?

This was a new construction project. The rooftop deck was not part of the original house plans so we had to design the concept, get it engineered, and permitted.

What were the challenges you faced?

The math involved took a lot of brain power. We also had to preplan to avoid water intrusion.

How did you tackle the challenges?

The stair risers needed to land exactly at the porch entrance/stair landings/and the upper stringer to be just above the roofline. From the initial step of pouring footers, it took multiple measurements and multiple brains to make sure we had the entire frame planned out. We waterproofed the posts up top and below the roof sheathing to prevent wicking and water transfer.

What problem did the client want to solve with the project?

The client was building a new construction home with no plans of a rooftop deck. Once they saw the Gulf views from the rooftop they contacted us to make their dream a reality.

How did you solve the problem?

We built an 8’ x 12’ deck structure on the roof with a full stair tower that attaches to their 2nd floor deck. Now they have views of the Gulf and a space big enough to relax and watch the sunrise and sunset.
